Revisiting my Favorite Doctor Who: Eleven and The Ponds

The 2005 reboot of Doctor Who is one of my favorite tv shows of all time. My favorite Doctor/companion combo has to be The Eleventh doctor and Amy Pond. The Pond era was excellent for all of Stephen Moffet's twists and turns (some say a bit too much, though). The secret of River Song, the family dynamic, the whole "Silence will fall" storyline, and even the heartbreaking finale of their journey.. it was all soooo good. Like most people, for the longest time, David Tennant's Tenth Doctor was my favorite, and his short single season run with Donna Noble was…

ToddyAwards2022: Binge ReWatch of The Year

I don't know why I can't get enough of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. It was the first MCU-centric television show out the gate. But over the years and after more popular shows release on Neflix, Disney+ and other streaming services, AoS has become something of a bastard stepchild compared to the other shows. It doesn't help that the people at Marvel are very ambiguous on whether this show is even canon with the movies (at this point the consensus is probably "no"). In truth, this show is hands down my favorite of the MCU shows, even after all these years.…

I Miss The Hayday of The Arrowverse

Back in the day when the DCEU was stumbling its way trying to catch up to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, CW's Arrowverse was the default universe for DC Comic adaptations. Starting with the first show Arrow, the television universe expanded with seven more shows, and gave us a few major crossover events similar to comic book events. Now, with DC and Warner Bros. wanting to focus on rebooting their cinematic universe, all the CW shows have been cancelled (with just Flash and Superman: Lois and Clark still remaining).  I can't wait for what DC does with the new DCEU under…

ToddyAwards2022: Shows

To say that 2022 was the year that streaming and television shows surpassed motion pictures in quality and quantity is an understatement. In the aftermath of the 2-year COVID lockdown, a lot of media companies pushed their prime content to television to satisfy their captive audience. And with the proliferation of streaming services, the need to release content to counteract churn has sent a flood on shows that make it almost impossible to watch everything you think is interesting. Normally for these lists, I like to keep it to a tight "10" picks. But in 2022, containing yourself to that is…

My Favorites of My Favorites: Supernatural

Very few shows can stand the craziness that is Supernatural, the... uh... "supernatural" thriller series that ran on first The WB, then The CW for 15 seasons. After the well crafted 5 season story arc from creator Eric Kripke, someone thought "...let's do another decade of seasons and try to escalate things to the point of utter madness." MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. Throughout the series run, the Winchesters have fought ghosts, demons, angels, vampires, werewolves and many other monsters for various folklore. And when they ran out of 'monsters', they elevated to Gods and Devils, including Greek, Norse, and Christian deities.. eventually…

I Can’t Wait for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The lastest crop of Star Trek shows has gotten a lot of flack for not living up to what 'The fandom' is expecting. Personally, I've been loving Star Trek Discovery and Star Trek Picard. The new ...Discovery spin-off, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is suppose to bring back the vibe of The Original Series back in '65... which I hope will silence a lot of the critics of the Trek Universe. I'll hold my breath for May 5th.

Yet Another Comic Book Adaptation To TV. HBO Readies DMZ

TV is once again trying to strike gold with another adaptation from independent comic books. HBO Max is about to try with Brian Wood's DMZ, about life in a zone labeled the Free States of America, during the near future's Second American Civil War. Let's hope this show is better than the disappointing last adaptation attempt, Y The Last Man.

The Second Part of The Walking Dead’s Final Season Trilogy is Ripped Straight Out of The Comics

The grandaddy of all zombie shows is back on February 20th. Splitting the final season into a trilogy of mini series has made the show feel different and ramped up the impending doom on the horizon. Will we see Rick and Michonne again? With the Commonwealth going to war with our survivors? If/how will other universal elements like World Beyond  and the trilogy of Rick Grimes movies factor into this final season? Time will tell..

ToddyAwards2021: Shows

Thanks to COVID, 2021 was the year of streaming. And media companies realized with so many captive eyeballs available (due to sheltering in place) that they needed to up their content game to capture those eyeballs. What we got was a ton of tv and streaming shows that rivaled motion pictures in visual quality and storytelling. Netflix doubled down on new content to retain their #1 spot online, Paramount, HBO, NBC, CBS and others entered the competition to streaming income, as well as Apple putting its best foot forward with excellent shows exclusively to their TV+ platform. My list could have…
